Director/Head Guide

From the river, and back again...

Simon is a local waterman who has been passionate about watersports since he began windsurfing on the Canning River in Perth as a boy of 11 years old. There he had a large group of adventure loving friends who were also into watersports, especially windsurfing. The river was their life; they swam, camped overnight on a small island, hunted for crabs, prawns, fish and cobbler, and grew up boating, surfboard skiing, surfing and windsurfing, often hitching rides to the coast, and generally making mischief as only teenage boys can!

Simon has a Bachelor of Environmental Science (Murdoch University) which he puts to good use developing his environmental knowledge and reading the weather accurately to assess local conditions. He followed his passion for watersports to place Runner Up Australian Windsurfing Champion in 1995 before moving to Margaret River where he developed the sports of windsurfing, kitesurfing and Stand Up Paddle into successful businesses, offering individual and group coaching and equipment sales. He has a Senior First Aid Certificate and is an experienced driver on WA town and country roads.

MR Kitesurfing and Windsurfing [www.mrkiteandsail.com.au] has been operating since 2002 and MR Stand Up Paddle since 2008.  Among other prizes, in 2014 Simon came second in the Elite section of Windsurfing WA’s Annual Wave Riding contest at Main Break in Margaret River. An article in the local AMR Mail (19 Feb 2014) reported that “The elite final showcased exceptional timing on the waves from all four competitors … Simon Peters used his local knowledge to read the waves perfectly."

Combining his love of watersports with the tranquility of the Blackwood and Margaret Rivers, Simon has expanded his Stand Up Paddle tour options and has developed a thriving business in equipment sales. So it’s a return to his roots on the river to run the ‘anyone can do it’ Stand Up Paddle Tours!

"I was looking for a suitable place to start a Margaret River day tour, a place that combined Stand Up Paddle with exploration of a beautiful location - a refreshing change from paddling around in circles at the beach - and the Blackwood River caught my attention. After running some popular tours in the area, I learnt about the significance of the Blackwood River for Aboriginal people and their dreaming stories about the Wagyl (Rainbow Serpent). The magic of the river, the tranquility, and the ease of paddling are hard to beat. Often there are eagles soaring overhead and kookaburras or cockatoos calling from the trees. I love the chance to leave my phone and commitments behind, to experience a great paddle while meeting new people, hearing about their experiences and travels. It’s a chance to pass on some handy coaching tips while sharing a sense of adventure and fun."

Simon is an inclusive, down to earth, compassionate person who has a natural affinity for teaching others, whatever their ability or background.

Simon invites you to join one of his tours and sample a taste of Margaret River adventure and homegrown fun.

About Stand Up Paddle

Stand Up Paddle (SUP) originated in Africa where warriors would stand on their canoes and use their paddle to propel themselves forwards. This method of stand up paddle boarding was used in an attempt to silently enter enemy territory for stealth attacks.

The popularity of modern SUP has its roots in the early 1960′s when the beach boys of Waikiki, Hawaii would stand on their long boards and paddle out with outrigger paddles to take pictures of students learning to surf.

Stand Up Paddle is lots of fun and easy to learn for all abilities and ages. The fitness, mental and physical benefits of SUP are well recognised, with an all-over body, low impact workout.
